I like shopping for the holidays, way before the crowds hit. Like I bought the little USB mini lights tree at Target for $5.99 (in the photo) early this morning right after I dropped off my daughter at kindie. It brightens up all the beauty products I work with.
Today's 'display' - haha - is Zoya's Zenith Nail collection. Perfect for the holidays with its glistening effect, but I particularly like the set because it's colors remind me of a winter's sunset -- there are dark blues, navies and silvers. It's feminine and distinctly bold and vivid at the same time. The darker shades will look amazing with your winter whites and the lighter shades with your pretty, sultry, dark suits or party dresses.
And, why I love Zoya? It's great for kids because it was the first company to remove toxic ingredients such as toluene, camphor,
formaldehyde, formaldehyde resin and DBP (dibutyl phthalate) from its
formulations.

The islands of Hawaii are beyond paradise. The air is moist from the lush fruit trees, the ocean breezes keep the tropical heat bearable - and the breathtaking beaches are what mythical tales are written about. Makeup and beauty on the islands comes down to the bare bones here -- the warm weather lends to not wearing much and letting your skin and features do most of the work. So here are my essentials for looking your best in high heat and mind-blowing sunlight: 1) Coconut Oil for Protecting Skin & Hair Naturally from Sun
A great roadside beverage, and an awesome beauty resource. Coconuts.
I've tried dozens of sunscreens. This is a gold-medal winner because it's super mist, powerful spray applicator is no-fail until the very end of the bottle. And it's a safe formula for delicate kids -- my daughter has atopic dermatitis, and usually has itchy reactions to 99 percent of even the most ultra "sensitive" and "hypo-allergenic, fragrance-free" sun creams. Yet, this was one she did not react to. What a testament. I also found that it was wonderful for getting sunscreen effectively onto my half a dozen or so tattoos. I just aimed and sprayed. Extra pluses are that there is no white residue, it's oil-free and has anti-oxidants. Shaka! for this sun must!

Great beauty and style is about looking good head to toe. Never overlook your toes - polishing them in the summer, when they're out and about makes such a difference. That little pop of color punches up your bikini or your tan. I love a soft purple nail as it's a color that in makeup or nails that looks good on any skin tone -- try Zoya's Perrie shade - it's a creamy lavender; so pretty. And I love Zoya because it's formaldehyde- toulene- and dibutyl phthalate- free.
I love the fourth finger accent nail. It's a subtle way to have a design and it's both delicate and edgy without being too in your face. It's also something you can do fast at home, but impress in a big way - and why not go with a designer logo that you adore or, if not that you can pick a simple nail decal of your choosing. I went with the classic Chanel camellia flower, which actually came in a Hello Kitty nail design set purchased at a Sanrio store in Honolulu for about $7, but here's one available online. It may not be authentic Chanel, but with a design so tiny, I hardly think it matters! Zoya Nail Polish, one of my absolute favorite companies for nail color, b/c it's toluene, formaldehyde and dibutyl phthalate free (so I feel safer applying it on my almost five year old daughter and friends -- not to mention that they've always got the edge on hues and texture) just came out with their Pixie Dust collection. The sparkle on this polish is sensational and superbly saturated. It's great for lifting your spirits for spring.
So do a Chanel Accent nail, or a logo accent nail -- just pick two contrasting colors from the Pixie set, and some decals. EASY! ;-)
THE HOW-TO: At HOME MANI BASICS:
Have your logo decal ready on hand for the fourth finger. You can even do the index finger if you want. Have an extra decal handy just in case you lose or mess up the nail. Also have tweezers on hand to apply the tiny decals as they are miniature.
1) Start as you would a normal home mani. The basics being that you would soak your hands in warm water, wash them, and moisturize with your favorite lotion. Then hydrate your cuticles with the best balm ever -- Qtica's Intense Cuticle Repair Balm ($18)
2) Push or cut your cuticles. Cut, trim, file and smooth your nails -- whatever you need and desire to do.
3) Apply a base coat.

4) Apply two coats of one color to finger 1, 2 ,3, and 5. In my case I used a periwinkle, Zoya's NYX.
Tip: It's good to have a hand towel underneath, and all your tools w/in hands reach so that you can fix a mistake w/ remover -- and be mess-free. My handy, travel-ready, cute nail kit w/ buffer, file and zip case was found at H&M for $3.
5) Apply two coats of the accent color to finger 4. I used a red, Zoya's CHYNA.

6) Apply a coat of base coat to finger 4. Quickly grab your logo decal with your tweezers (my favorites are Rubis Slant), applying on an area of your choice (I picked the upper middle section) and press down evenly on your nail all over the decal so that it adheres well. Here's my quickie video on how to do it:
7) Apply a top coat quickly and press down again with the tweezer to seal the layers.
8) Apply a top coat to all nails. Allow ample time to dry -- 20-30 minutes.

Sandpaper feet, toes like talons, feet you're embarrassed to rub up, and uh, scratch (cringe!) against your special someone! Or style-wise, we wouldn't dare want to showcase those in some spectacular open-toed Jimmy Choo's or even basic Havaianas. You know what I mean. Pedicures were not created equal. I'm sure you know!
I recently met up with Erica Marton, a celebrity manicurist at the posh Sally Hershberger Face Place in the Meatpacking district of NYC. My colleague Anne Fritz had been raving about her and so I had no choice (Of course! What girl says no to a pedi?) but to check her out. Her specialization? Using a drill to smooth feet for a "medicure." Sounds scary, but it feels gentle and wonderful actually. But the real beauty is that Erica is just the funniest, most charming and warm person ever. Sitting in a private room with her is like having a girl's night with someone you feel like you've known forever. You don't even know your feet are getting "shaved" or filed like you would with other salons where you might be flinching and tensing your toesies. After 45 minutes I was relaxed, giddy with girl-chat and just plain happy. And my feet? Soft as a baby's bottom. I highly recommend! She's amazing! No wonder the New York Times has spotted her! ;-).
I promise, it feels great!
